We guarantee accommodation for international students. However, if you choose
to, you are welcome to make your own accommodation arrangements. We recommend
that you stay in a homestay when you first arrive in Auckland. You can always
move out and find your own accommodation once you have settled. Please indicate
your preference for accommodation on the enrolment form or contact our
Accommodation Officer for advice.
Students who stay in homestay accommodation find that their English improves
much faster than living with friends from your own country. We recommend
homestay accommodation for at least six months before moving into independant
living.
If you are under 18 years old, you are required by the New Zealand government to live
in an approved accommodation that is monitored by the school until you attain 18 years of age. All Queens Academic Group (QAG) homestay accommodations are approved by the CEO. If you intend to live with an adult family member or
close family friend they must be approved by your parents as your designated caregiver. They will become part of the school's homestay
families and are able to gain full benefit and support from the school
while you are attending this school. Approvals from the CEO must be obtained if you intend to move or change accomodation at all times. Approvals will only be made for approved QAG's homestay accommodations.
Homestay
Homestay accommodation is the usual and most popular form of accommodation. It is
a great way for international students to learn about New Zealand culture. It provides an ideal opportunity for you to get the chance to
experience life in a New Zealand family home and also to practice speaking English.
New Zealand host families are carefully chosen for you to stay with. Your host family
will provide you with a single bedroom, at least two meals per day and clean bed
linen and towels at least once a week. All homestay families are monitored by
school.
Homestay accommodation costs from NZ $230 to $250 per week and is subject to a homestay
booking fee (refer to fees section). Most students will either stay in a
homestay for the whole duration of their study or at least for the first four weeks of their study. Students booked in to stay for more than four weeks may give their homestay host two weeks notice if they wish to move out.
QAG has an established relationship of trust with its homestay families and
regularly inspects all homestay accommodations to ensure they meet the quality standards as prescribed to them. The school requires all adults above 18 years of age staying with the homestay families to be police vetted. If you have any
concerns or queries regarding your homestay arrangements or conditions you
should speak to our Accommodation Officer.
Students hostels
Single or shared, fully furnished, apartment style accommodation in student
hostels are available within walking distance from the school.
Cost varies from NZ $140 to NZ $200 per week and a minimum stay period of six
months. A registration fee may apply.
This option is not available to students under 18 years of age.
Backpacker hostels
You may choose to stay in one of the many backpackers hostels throughout
Auckland City. Backpacker accommodation is generally aimed at budget adventure
travellers and visitors on working holidays.
Accommodation costs range from NZ$20 to NZ$55 per night depending on type of
room (shared dorm, bunk room, self contained unit). Specials deals can be made
for extended periods of stay. Two popular hostels are Auckland Central
Backpackers and Downtown Backpackers.
This option is not available to students under 18 years of age.
Motel/hotel
Students can also choose to live in a motel or hotel if they wish. This is an
expensive option aimed at family and business travellers and should only be
considered for short-term or temporary accommodation. Price varies from NZ$55 to
NZ$200 per night and is more expensive in the summer.
Thsi option is not available to students under 18 years of age.
Flatting
Another popular option for students studying in New Zealand is known as flatting. This involves
sharing a rented house or apartment with other people (not always students).
Rent is normally NZ$120 to NZ$250 per person per week depending on living
conditions and location. You will have to share the additional cost of power,
water and electricity with the people you are living with.
This option is not availabe to students under 18 years of age.
