National Diploma in Business (Level 5)

Overview

The National Diploma in Business (Level 5) is an intermediate qualification for students seeking a career in business or a convenient starting point for further studies in a business related discipline at university.

You will gain knowledge and understanding of modern western business theory and learn practical business skills to manage business operations that are in demand by employers.

Upon successful completion of this diploma course you will be awarded the National Diploma in Business (Level 5) which is widely recognised by employers throughout New Zealand.

Entry Criteria:

General entry

Completed 12 years of schooling in home country

English Language Requirement: IELTS 5.5

Students who do not meet these entry conditions will be required to complete the school entry test.

 

Mature age entry

 

20+ years of age and relevant work experience

Fees:

NZD $7500 per semester

NZD $1000 materials fee (only payable once)

Course Structure:

120 NQF credits distributed across 10 papers (5 papers per academic semester see below)

Course Duration:

One Year (full-time)

Two semesters of 14 weeks each

Credit transfer

Credit exemption of up to 40 credits can be granted for selected New Zealand Diploma of Business papers.

 

Credit may also be granted by recognition of prior learning or current competency.

Student who wish to be considered will need to submit original documents and may be required to complete the school challenge test to confirm prior learning.

Certification:

You will have to pass all 10 papers (see below) to be awarded the qualification.

Information of Individual Papers


Each Paper consists of individual unit standards which must be completed before the paper can be credited to the student.

Where the unit standards have the same content as individual papers in the NZ Diploma in Business, they have been given the same number and title.  Students entering these papers will be taught these concepts at the same time as student enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business paper.


120 Economic Environment

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Investigate macroeconomic activity using the aggregate demand and aggregate supply model
 • Demonstrate knowledge of monetary policy and evaluate its effectiveness
 • Investigate the causes and discuss the consequences of exchange rate movements
 • Explain and evaluate arguments for and against free trade and trade restrictions
 • Analyse economic events using the demand and supply model and elasticity
 • Investigate and analyse consumer behaviour and consumer surplus using economic principles
 • Analyse and compare the behaviour and performance of firms under perfect competition and monopoly
 • Analyse and describe the behaviour of firms operating under monopolistic competition and oligopoly

Completion of this paper will gain the students 17 credits.


110 – Commercial Law

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Apply the law of contract to a given fact situation
 • Apply the law of agency to a given fact situation
 • Apply selected torts to a given fact situation
 • Demonstrate knowledge of the law of property in New Zealand
 • Demonstrate knowledge of consumer legislation
 • Demonstrate knowledge of the Personal Property Securities Act

Completion of this paper will gain the students 19 credits.


140 Business Communication

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Conduct formal meetings
 • Demonstrate knowledge of group processes
 • Present information orally to an audience
 • Analyse feedback contexts and apply constructive feedback techniques
 • Analyse listening techniques, and listen and respond to information received

Completion of this paper will gain the student 18 credits


233 Human Resource Management

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Enable non-specialists to undertake human resources management activities
 • Behave professionally and ethically in all aspects of human resources management

Completion of this paper will gain the student 10 credits


100 – Accounting Principles

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Explain the objectives of and apply the processes of financial analysis
 • Explain the nature of professional and regulatory processes for accounting

Completion of this paper will gain the student 15 credits


141 Marketing Principles

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Determine the marketing mix
 • Conduct marketing research

Completion of this paper will gain the student 17 credits


130 Organisation & Management

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Explain and apply principles and practices of operations management

Completion of this paper will gain the student 14 credits


150 Business Administration

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Prepare business information for management
 • Present business information for a business purpose
 • Plan and organise business meetings, and complete meeting administration
 • Manage and coordinate business meetings to achieve outcomes

Completion of this paper will gain the student 22 credits


232 First Line Management

Student completing this paper will complete unit standards which

 • Develop performance standards and monitor performance for a logistics operation
 • Plan, implement, and maintain a business operation

Completion of this paper will gain the student 18 credits

 

Credit Transfer

It is possible that you may already have studied, or gained other experience, in some of the things that are taught at QIBT. In this case, you may be eligible to gain credits through recognition of prior learning or current competency.

Students who wish to be considered for credit transfer need to submit original documents and may be required to complete the school challenge test to confirm prior learning.
