Overview
The New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) introduces students to the main disciplines of business and provides a bridging programme to business degree study while also providing a free standing industry recognised qualification sought by New Zealand employers.
You may choose to specialise in either Accounting or Management depending on your future study or employment goals. Upon successful completion of this diploma course you will be awarded the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6).
Students who do not choose to specialise can enter the programme and complete papers which conform to the awarding of the diploma. Six core papers must be completed and six optional papers four of which must be at 600 level.

Compulsory Papers
400 Accounting Principles
This paper provides students with an understanding of financial statements and reports and to enable them to analyse and interpret business performance. Topics include the Business Environment, Financial Statements and Components, Budgeting and the analysis and interpretation of Financial Statements. Students require no prior accounting knowledge.
This is a compulsory paper for all students enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business.
510 Introduction to Commercial Law
Students are provided with a basic knowledge in the field of commercial law, to enable them to apply legal reasoning and to develop an organised approach to problem solving. Topics include; the basis of New Zealand Law, the Law of Contract, the Law of Agency, Consumer Protection as well as a special topic project in which each student explores an individual topic of interest. No prior knowledge is required.
This is a compulsory paper for all students enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business.
520 The Economic Environment
Students are provided with a basic knowledge in the field of commercial law, to enable them to apply legal reasoning and to develop an organised approach to problem solving. 530 Organisation & Management
This paper provides an introductory study of management and the organisational context within which management is performed. This includes four perspectives on organisations and management [integrative, functional, cultural and behavioural], the external environment and internal processes of organisations, the nature of the manager’s job, management decision making and the ethical constraints and social responsibility dimensions of management. No specific prior knowledge is required but students should have some awareness of the business environment.

560 Business Communication
This paper develops within a context appropriate to business: the students knowledge and understanding of the communication process; the ability and confidence in effective verbal and non-verbal, oral, written and graphic communication with the business environment; the skills o thinking, analysing and problem solving; and effective interpersonal communication skills.
This is a compulsory paper for all students enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business.
541 Marketing Principles
The aim of this paper is for students to develop a broad understanding of marketing principles for application to enterprise activities. Students will also develop the knowledge and understanding which are needed to assess product, price, promotion and distribution options, and to make marketing mix recommendations for specific target markets. Students do not have to have any prior knowledge.
This is a compulsory paper for all students enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business.
550 Business Computing
This paper will provide students with a working knowledge of information technology and how it relates to a business environment. They will also develop the skills to enhance their personal productivity and problem solving using appropriate business application tools. No prior knowledge is required but basic word processing skills would be useful.
This is a compulsory paper for all students enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business.
Optional Papers
501 Accounting Practices
The aim of this paper is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to record and process financial transactions that will enable the preparation of management information and financial statements for entities in accordance with current accounting practices.
435 Fundamentals of Small Business
This paper covers provides the student with knowledge of small business opportunities and operations including ownership options and business structures. Also studied are control techniques; evaluation processes; and marketing options. The student will also gain knowledge of the skills required for analysis and identifying appropriate solutions for managing small business operations.
430 Quantitative Business Methods
This paper provides for the study of statistical data analysis involving the collection, analysis and interpretation of data from business and information sources. A variety of statistical packages will be explored and the mathematics of finance including the use of a spreadsheet package such as Excel. The approach used in this paper will concentrate on practical applications and not the mathematical background. Computer packages will be used and this will allow for the analysis of large data sets.
601 Financial Accounting
This paper aims to enable students to apply the regulatory and technical aspects of financial accounting and external reporting for companies and to critically examine financial and anon-financial information. Students are recommended to have completed 100 – Accounting Principles and 101 Accounting Practices before attempting this paper.
602 Management Accounting
This paper aims to enable students to collect, interpret and present relevant information, that managers of organisations need, to plan, control and make decisions about their operations.
603 Business Finance
This paper will proved students with the necessary knowledge and skills of business finance so they may function effectively in association with the financial management decision-makers. Emphasis is given to modern accounting practice in New Zealand, particular as it relates to small to medium businesses.
630 Leadership
This paper introduces students to the principles and practices of leadership. It provides students with the major tools and techniques of business leadership and gives them the opportunity to engage in the leadership process. Students are encouraged to use an innovative approach to thinking and develop and use critical reflection throughout the course.
633 Human Resource Management
This paper is designed to meet the needs of students who require skills ands knowledge in human resources management in general or specific organisational roles. This includes human resource functions, processes, procedures and related legislation needed to effectively manage people in organisations. It will also allow students to practice the skills in specific human resource management processes. Students must have completed paper 130 Organisation & Management.
636 Applied Management
Applied Management is the foundation stone for intergrating business disciplines and applying management theory in a pragmatic sense in the workplace. The essence of Applied Management is developing competency in the application of management principles. The process is project based, interactive and inclusive. A major part of the core of the paper is team dynamics and students are required to work in teams and for this process to be assessed.
Recognition of Qualification
The qualification is recognised through formal articulation agreements with selected New Zealand and Australian education providers.
Students who sit at least three papers in their first semester and maintain at least a 'B' average will be eligible to transfer to Massey University and Auckland University of Technology.
If we do not have a formal agreement in place with the university you want to study at, for example an American university, we can enquire on your behalf and help you complete a credit recognition application.
Credit Transfer
It is possible that you may already have studied, or gained other experience, in some of the things that are taught at QAG. In this case, you may be eligible to gain credits through recognition of prior learning or current competency.
Students who wish to have other previous studies considered for credit transfer must submit original documents. Students may also be require dto complete a school's challenge test to confirm prior learning.
